1950 March 15
Prime Minister of India established:
Five Year Plan
Joseph Stalin implemented first five year plan in Soviet Union in 1920.
China and India both continue to use FYPs - 1951 - Jawaharlal Nehru
Currently underway the 12 th Plan.
The first Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru presented the kushagra nijhara
First Plan: 1951- 1956
Irrigation, Energy, Land Rehabilitation, Development of Agriculture and community
1952 - Indian started family planning
1953 - University Grand Commission
1956 - Indian Institute of Technology, started 5 IIT's in India
Irrigation projects started during the period: Bakranangal, Hirakud, Mettur dams
Second Plan: 1956-1961
Focused on heavy industry, development of public sector
Followed Mahalanobis model and economic development model developed by the Indian Statistician Prasanta
Chandra Mahalanobis 1n 1953
Hydraulic power projects and five steel mills at: Bhilai, Durgapur, Rourkela
1957: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was established.
Third Plan: 1961-1966
Stressed on Agriculture and improvement in the production of wheat.
1962: Sino-Indian war weakens the economy
1965-66: India-Pak war
Primary schools have started in rural area
Panjayath election have started
State electricity board and secondary education boards formed
State road transport corporations formed
Plan holidays: 1966-67m 1968-69)
Gadgil formula was formulated under the deputy chairman of the planning commission Dr. D R Gadgil
Fourth Plan: 1069-1974
Prime minister: Indira Gandhi
1974: Nationalization of 14 banks
Green revolution in India
1974: Smiling Buddha underground nuclear test
1971: Bangladesh Liberation War
Seven Fleet (US Navy) in the Bay of Bengal had been deployed to warn India against attacking the west 
Pakistan (Bangladesh)
Fifth Plan (1974-1979)
Stress was laid on employment and poverty alleviation and justice.
1978: Morarji Desai rejected the plan
1975: Electricity Supply Act was enacted in 1975
Indian national highway system was introduced
Sixth Plan: 1980 -1985
Economic liberalization.  Price controls
Prime Minister: Rajiv Gandhi
Family planning was expanded in order to prevent overpopulation.
Sixth five year plan was a great success to Indian economy.
Seventh Plan: 1985-1990
Marked the comeback of the Congress Party.
Objectives: Establish growth in areas of increasing economic productivity, production of food grains, and generating employment.
1998-91 was a period of economic instability in India and hence no five-year plan was implemented
1990- 1992: there were no Annual Plans
Eight Plan: 1992- 1997
1991: India faced crises in Foreign Exchange (Forex)
P V Narasimha Rao was the 9th prime minister
Beginning of privatization and liberalization, modernization of industries was a major highlight
1995: India became a member of World Trade Organization
Ninth Plan: 1996-2002
Objectives: Speedy industrialization, human development, full-scale employment. Poverty reduction and self-reliance on domestic resources
Tenth Plan: 2002-2007
Target growth: 8.1% achieved 7.7%
20-point programme was introduced
Eleventh Plan: 2007-2012
Twelth Plan: 2012-2017
